When my husband and I first relocated to the Triangle from Southern California about 6 years ago, we heard all kinds of mixed reviews about Durham. Some folks told us it was unsafe, while others raved about the amazing food scene. Coming from Los Angeles County, we understood city life dynamics - knowing which areas were great to visit and which ones to avoid after dark.

Being the curious folks we are, we decided to really explore Durham ourselves. We spent several days wandering around the city, and let me tell you, we discovered exactly why so many people are falling in love with The Bull City!

Rich History Meets Modern Innovation

Durham has been shaped by three major influences: its tobacco roots, Duke University, and the Research Triangle Park. While the tobacco industry ended in the late 1990s, it left behind beautiful buildings that have been transformed into the thriving downtown area we see today.

The American Tobacco Historic District, Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) all showcase this incredible revitalization. My husband and I love grabbing a bite downtown, then catching a baseball game or Broadway show at DPAC!

Top-Notch Education

Durham is home to Duke University, a prestigious institution that has significantly impacted the city's growth. But it's not just about higher education - Durham also boasts exceptional K-12 schools.

The Duke School offers an innovative project-based curriculum with a 7:1 student-teacher ratio. There are excellent magnet schools like City of Medicine Academy and Durham School of the Arts, plus private options like Durham Academy and Trinity School of Durham.

Jobs That Keep Coming

The Research Triangle Park (RTP) is a 7,000-acre business park and the largest high-tech research and development center in the United States! It's home to over 300 companies, primarily in technology and biotech.

Meanwhile, Duke University Health System is the largest employer in Durham County with approximately 26,000 full-time employees. With such a strong job market, it's no wonder so many professionals are choosing Durham as their home base.

Surprisingly Affordable Living

When compared to the West Coast and Northeast, Durham remains relatively affordable. The median price for a single-family home is approximately $445,000, and a townhome is around $360,000 as of May 2024.

For my California clients who relocate here, they're always shocked by how much more house they can get for their money. And the utilities are about 12% less expensive than the national average - that's money back in your pocket every month!

Outdoor Paradise

Durham has amazing outdoor spaces to explore! Eno River State Park is just 15 minutes from downtown, offering hiking, swimming, and camping. The American Tobacco Trail stretches 22 miles and is perfect for walking, running, or biking.

One of my personal favorites is Sarah P. Duke Gardens - 55 acres of absolute beauty with 5 miles of trails. I can spend hours there just soaking in the serenity! Plus, Falls Lake and Jordan Lake are only about 20 minutes away for water activities.

Sports Heaven

For sports enthusiasts, Durham delivers! The Durham Bulls baseball games are a family staple (and yes, it's the team from the movie "Bull Durham"). The stadium sits right downtown, making it perfect for dinner and a game.

And let me tell you about the college sports scene - it's INTENSE! The rivalries between Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and NC State are serious business. When we first moved here, someone asked what color blue we preferred, and we had no idea what they were talking about! Many locals are die-hard fans from birth.

Arts, Music, and Culture

Durham's arts scene is vibrant and accessible. DPAC brings in top Broadway shows and performers from around the world. During summer, you can enjoy free performances throughout the city from the American Tobacco Campus to Durham Central Park.

There are festivals year-round, like the Eno Festival and the Durham Blues and Brews Festival. The cultural scene here punches way above its weight for a city this size!

Foodie Paradise

I'm a serious foodie, and Durham does not disappoint! It was named the "Tastiest Town in the South" by Southern Living, and for good reason.

Some of our favorites include King's Sandwich Shop (a local favorite since 1942), Dame's Chicken and Waffles, La Veta Taqueria (with homemade corn tortillas - hard to find in the South!), and Parker & Otis (their pimento grilled cheese is to die for!). For date night, we love Luna Rotisserie or M Sushi.

The food scene here is so good I could write an entire blog just about that!

Unique Shopping Options

Durham offers diverse shopping experiences, from the Streets at Southpoint (in my opinion, the best mall in the Triangle with both Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack) to Brier Creek's big box stores.

What makes Durham special are the unique grocery options beyond the usual chains. The Durham Co-op Market features local and organic foods, while Bulldega Urban Market offers gourmet and specialty products. I love trying their seasonal jams and butters!

Perfect Weather Balance

If you're like me and moved from the West Coast, you'll appreciate Durham's four distinct seasons. Yes, summers get humid, but they're short. Spring and fall are absolutely gorgeous and remind me so much of California weather.

Winters are mild - no need for that snow shovel if you're coming from up North! And while we get about 47 inches of rain annually (which keeps everything beautifully green), we don't worry about wildfires and mudslides like we did in California.

Ideal Location for Day Trips

Living in Durham puts you in a perfect spot for weekend adventures! The beaches of North Carolina are just 2.5 hours away - Wrightsville Beach, Topsail, and the Outer Banks are all within reach for a day or weekend trip.

In the other direction, you're less than 2 hours from Hanging Rock State Park, and just a bit further to Boone for mountain activities like hiking or skiing. It's like having vacation destinations in your backyard!

Community Spirit

What ties everything together is Durham's incredible community spirit. This city embraces its diverse history while constantly innovating. From tech entrepreneurs to artists, academics to chefs, Durham welcomes everyone.

The city has transformed itself multiple times throughout history, from tobacco town to City of Medicine to today's creative hub. That resilient, innovative spirit is what makes Durham truly special.
