Moving from California to North Carolina: Why We Chose Raleigh
Are you considering relocating to North Carolina and wondering if the Raleigh Triangle area would be a good fit for you and your family? My family and I faced the same question six years ago when we began researching states similar to California. One of the most common questions I receive is why we moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, from California and if we miss it.
Having grown up in California, it will always have a special place in my heart, but today, I'm a Carolinian at heart. In this blog, I'll share why my family and I love living in North Carolina and why we would never move back to California. I'll also highlight some major differences between living in California and North Carolina.
Housing Prices
The primary reason for our move was the drastic difference in housing prices. According to Nerdwallet.com, housing prices in California are 157% higher than in North Carolina. For example, housing in Long Beach, California, is 43% more expensive than in Raleigh. We found that our money stretched much further here in Raleigh, allowing us to afford more spacious homes. The average home price in Raleigh is around $427,000 compared to $740,000 in California. We even managed to buy two homes for less than the price of one in California!
Cost of Living
Beyond housing, the overall cost of living in North Carolina is more affordable. From lower income, sales, and property taxes to cheaper gas prices, the savings add up. While some expenses like health insurance and groceries can be higher, the overall cost of living is significantly less. Lower taxes and affordable goods and services make for a better living standard here.
Education
Education was another critical factor in our decision. North Carolina ranks in the top 10 for affordable tuition and fees. Raleigh spends 29% less per student than San Diego, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 33% lower. With top-ranking colleges like NC State, Duke University, and UNC Chapel Hill, Raleigh is an excellent place for educational opportunities.
Traffic
California's traffic is notorious, often feeling like a parking lot. In contrast, Raleigh's traffic is much lighter, with average commute times significantly shorter. You can reach most places in Raleigh within 20-30 minutes, even during rush hour.
Community and Friendliness
The community in North Carolina is incredibly welcoming. People here are more likely to engage in friendly conversations and make you feel at home. This was a refreshing change from the more guarded interactions we experienced in California.
Weather
While California's weather is famous for its sunshine and dry heat, North Carolina offers a pleasant mix of four seasons. Although it can get humid, it's not as severe as some other states. The rainfall here is a welcome change from California's dry climate, and the occasional snowfall adds to the charm.
From the lower cost of living and housing prices to the friendly community and great educational opportunities, Raleigh, North Carolina, offers a high quality of life.
